Ross Kraft and Andrew F. Biernat of Meridian Group of New
York, Inc. met with Tina Mufford, Legislative Director for
Thomas M. Reynolds, Member of Congress, New York, 26th. District
(Buffalo). The meeting took place on Tuesday, March 28th while
attending the 2006 National Association of Health Underwriters
annual Cap Conference in Washington, D.C. During Meridian's
visit, they discussed the current healthcare environment in New
York State and various legislative initiatives they believe can
improve both the affordability and accessability of health care
for all New Yorkers. Included in the discussion was health
insurance market reforms including S.1955 (Senator Enzi-WY)
which aims to create small group market rating and mandate
uniformity and a level playing field nationwide, and would
achieve these objectives without harming state-based regulation.
It would allow AHPs only if they are fully insured and if they
play by all market rules that apply to other plans, including
state rating and mandate requirements. The bill would also allow
plans with limited mandates to be sold nationwide. Also
discussed was Medical Cost Transparency, Consumer-Directed
Healthcare, High Risk Pools and the Uninsured. This is one of
Meridian's many engagements that exemplify their commitment not
only to their company, but the Health Insurance industry as a
whole.
